Making the general survey of the whole country, nearly all the provinces used bulk bitumen except Guizhou and Tibet. It has been proved that Guizhou is suitable for using bulk bitumen completely at present. It will decrease use-cost and make great profit if bulk bitumen can be spreaded.

2. Great diversity in cost

(1) Packing charge

Nowadays, the steels’ price increases by a big margin in domestic and international market. Each new drum is about 100 Yuan while the packing charge of every ton of bitumen is about 550 Yuan; it needs 300 Yuan around even using the old drum (60 Yuan for each).However, the rental charge for special-use tank of bulk is within 150 Yuan each ton. Therefore, it has obvious superiority of bulk bitumen in packing cost.

(2) Shipment

The cost for times of transportation and load and unload is about 50 each ton because the drummed bitumen needs to be canned by mechanism or labor force.

(3) Bitumen slipping

According to statistics, it’ll take 75 hours to separate bitumen from drum every kilometer on the basis of 6 drums an hour in building express way; on the contrary, we’ll spend no time in bitumen slipping if using bulk bitumen. In addition, it is necessary to heat in bitumen slipping. The labor cost of it amounts to about 12.9 thousand Yuan around for 5 Yuan per drum as well as 2571 drums are required per kilometer. And it requires 6.7 liters diesel oil to separate one ton bitumen, so the total cost of diesel oil reaches 11.2 thousand Yuan around per kilometer on the basis of 4250 Yuan each ton. It will save 136.5 thousand Yuan per kilometer to use bulk bitumen only in the aspect of bitumen slipping with reference to these three quantizing data without thinking about cost for setting up slipping and heating facilities.

(4) Loss

The loss attains 10% after slipping and heating of drummed bitumen. The loss of remained bitumen will reach 12.86 tons due to slipping in every one kilometer of express way and 12860 tons 1000 kilometers on condition that each drum loses 5 kilograms. According to measurement of experts from Ministry of Communications, each ton of bitumen will lose 8-12%, that is, 400-600 Yuan per ton due to incomplete bitumen slipping. However, there is no loss as bulk bitumen is freighted directly to the building sites by tanker.

(5) Pollution

Drummed bitumen needs large acreage storage yard. It will spill if placing long time or the temperature becomes higher after canned, which will pollutes environment. Furthermore, the traditional drummed bitumen is freighted to building sites after canned and frozen, then heated for using. Usually it is heated by diesel oil, which produce a great deal of lampblack as well as it will produce smoke and dust and gas during this process, all that is harmful to the human beings and environment. On the contrary, bulk bitumen is sealed and freighted to building sites by special heat preservation tanker, afterwards, paved immediately or input mixing station to process asphalt concrete without heating again, which not only guarantees the quality of bitumen but avoids environmental pollution. This is a kind of thrift in another sense.

This shows that it is thriftier than to use drummed bitumen of using bulk bitumen. It also has a great superiority in the aspects of environmental protection, safety in production and product quality. And it is a project with favorable economic and social benefit too.
